Especially in medical technologies the production of instruments and implants is characterized by a trend of miniaturization and highest demands in view of surface quality, particle free processing, cleanness and avoidance of material residues. For this, new methods of production are required, because traditional methods have already reached their limit.

It is the aim of 3D-Micromac to fulfill the requirements of the medical technology concerning quality and precision by implementing new laser joining technologies. For this reason the company developed the laser system microWELD for welding plastics, which exemplary fulfils the sectors` requirements and allows a secure and hygienic production.

The usage of a modulated cw-laser enables the creation of clean and accurate welds in the range of microns. This paves the way for completely new product designs, which were not possible by application of traditional welding technologies. An innovative beam guidance, a special feeding for work pieces, a suction at the point of welding as well as the machine control software microMMI are completing the microWELD system of 3D-Micromac.

Compared to conventional joining techniques like bonding, ultrasonic or vibration welding, the process-related advantages of laser welding are obvious. Many further preferences are shown by plastic welding besides various well-known advantages of laser machining, such as wear-resistance, extraordinary precision and economic processing. These are, for instance, a particularly small and well controllable energy transfer and a precise heating, which enables a minimum of thermal and mechanical load of the workpiece. This allows the processing of prefabricated construction elements, whereby the already implemented and sensitive electronic is not damaged.

The microWELD systems have already been applied successfully at different manufacturers in this sector, such as the fabrication of microfluidic cartridges and blood analyzing sensors.
